Brass vs Hardened Steel Nozzles: When to Upgrade (2026)

Here's the short version: brass and hardened steel nozzles differ in exactly two ways that matter. Brass transfers heat into the filament better, which is why it's the default on nearly every printer sold. Hardened steel resists abrasion, which brass emphatically does not. That's the whole comparison — the right choice depends entirely on what you feed your machine, not on which nozzle is "better."

The failure mode that forces the upgrade is quiet. Carbon-fiber, glow-in-the-dark, wood-fill, and metal-fill filaments all get their party trick from hard particles mixed into the plastic, and those particles grind away at a brass bore every minute of every print. A 0.4mm hole slowly becomes something bigger and sloppier, dimensional accuracy drifts, and top surfaces get ragged — gradually enough that most people retune their slicer three times before they think to look at the nozzle. Hardened steel shrugs that abuse off. Its only real tax is slightly lower thermal conductivity, which you cover by nudging the print temperature up a few degrees.

The picks

If you run a Bambu P1 or X1, this is the genuine part, and I'd stop shopping there. It runs $20–40, users rate it 4.7 stars, and the fit and finish match the machine. The one caveat is the flip side of that: it's machine-specific, so it does nothing for you on anything else. Order it before your first carbon-fiber spool arrives, not after.

Ender-class printers get the budget path. This is a multi-pack of hardened MK8-style nozzles for $10–20 total (4.4 stars), which fits most Creality hotends and means you always have a spare — worth a lot on a printer where nozzle swaps happen by hand with two wrenches. Double-check that the diameter matches what your slicer profile expects. Machining consistency won't match a premium single nozzle, but at a few dollars each that's a trade most Ender owners take happily.

How to actually run this

Don't frame it as brass versus steel. Run both. Keep brass installed for PLA, PETG, and ABS — it's genuinely the better nozzle for those, and it's cheap enough to treat as a consumable. Keep one hardened nozzle dedicated to abrasives, swap it in whenever the filament sparkles or has "CF" in the name, and swap it back out afterward. A dedicated abrasive nozzle also gives you a clean debugging signal: if quality drops on plain PLA, you know it isn't wear.

Who shouldn't buy

If you print plain PLA and PETG and have no plans for composite filament, skip hardened steel entirely. You'd pay money to make heat transfer marginally worse and gain protection against a problem you don't have. And don't buy a hardened nozzle to fix stringing, poor bed adhesion, or layer shifts — none of those are nozzle-material problems, and the upgrade will change nothing.

Bottom line

Brass for everything ordinary, hardened steel from the very first abrasive spool — bought before the spool, not after, because the damage is done by the time you can see it. Bambu owners spend $20–40 once on the genuine part; Ender owners spend $10–20 on a set of spares. Either way it's one of the cheapest decisions in this hobby, and putting it off is the only way to get it wrong.
